Spring is finally here! All locked-down winter long, I dreamed of these early spring days when the earth starts to wake back up and everything is bursting with life. This spring in Buffalo has been unseasonably warm and I’ve been soaking up every last minute of it. With the warm weather came the early arrival of spring flowers— the cherry blossoms & magnolias are in full bloom around the city and the sights and smells of spring are absolutely amazing.

This past weekend, I made my way to the grounds of the Buffalo History Museum to enjoy the cherry blossoms after the morning rain showers. Walking around the Japanese Gardens outside the museum, I spent some time really admiring the building itself. It was once the New York State Pavilion— the only permanent structure of the Pan-Am Exposition. Designed by architect George Cary, the structure was built out of Vermont marble in 1901 and finished in 1929 with the addition of identical wings in the east and west ends of the building. Around the outside of the building, there are relief sculptures carved by Edmund Amateis depicting scenes from Western New York History including the Underground Railroad and the burning of Buffalo in 1813. Several panels were left intentionally blank so that future historical events can be added. Amateis also carved the sculptures representing the forces of civilization in the south pediment overlooking Mirror Lake. I highly suggest taking a walk through the pink and white blossoms in the Japanese Gardens while they are in full bloom and don’t forget to look up to enjoy the incredible architecture and artistry of the Buffalo History Museum! It’s really incredible to have this piece of American history right in our backyard and I can’t believe it took me this long to notice the details!

In the past, Buffalo, NY has been rated one of the best places to view cherry blossoms in the world! Keep scrolling for a couple suggestions on where can you view this beautiful spring display around Western New York this spring!

Leave a comment if you have suggestions of more places to check out the blooms in the area!

  • The Japanese Gardens at the Buffalo History Museum has a beautiful stand of cherry trees currently in full bloom! Get there soon— they don’t last very long!

The peak bloom lasts about 7-14 days, but weather conditions and human interaction can speed that up.

(please don’t shake and pick flowers off the trees!)

  • Linden Ave and Princeton Blvd in Kenmore, NY are one-block streets lined in the most gorgeous blooming cherry trees! Much less crowded than the Japanese Gardens, but it is a residential neighborhood so please be respectful while taking a walk around the block!

  • Forest Lawn Cemetery’s Mirror Lake is lined in gorgeous cherry blossom trees that typically bloom a little later than everywhere else! While you’re there, take a leisurely walk around the historic cemetery to admire the peaceful surroundings and beautiful monuments.
